Mister Freedom's Lot 64 Jeans take inspiration from the postwar denim fits of the 1950s, with additional details from the 1960s that drag them further forward in time - featuring a slightly lower rise, and a touch more taper down the legs. The attention to detail is exactly what we've come to expect from Mister Freedom, but no less impressive, as these employ a whooping 12 thread changes during their construction.
To expand a bit on the fit, these are a comfortable mid rise, hitting that perfect centrist middle between high rise and low rise jeans, with a fitted (but not tight or snug) top block and athletic thighs. These are almost a straight fit, with a very subtle taper below the knees (which is what we mean when we say "1960s" fit) that ends in a leg opening big enough for boots but slim enough for sneakers. They're your very favorite go-to, everyday pair of jeans.
This time around, they're made from Sugar Cane Japan's AWA-AI denim, a 13oz selvedge denim made from the proprietary 70% cotton / 30% sugar cane fibre blend developed by Toyo Enterprises. This low-tension-weave has a lot of character, with an irregular face texture featuring cotton neps, tonal variation, and a subtle hairiness on the outside. This is a raw and unwashed fabric that is cut large and intended to shrink down to tag size after the first wash.
The name Awa-Ai refers to the old name ("Awa") of the Tokushima Prefecture in Japan, and Ai-zome (indigo-dyed) fabrics. During the Edo and Meji periods in Japan, the region's primary industry was the production of natural indigo dyes, which were grown from plants, harvested, and processed in the region thanks to a favorable climate. The fabric for these jeans has been rope-dyed with a blend of synthetic indigo and traditional Awa-Ai indigo before being woven together on vintage looms, resulting in a deep, dark color that will fade slowly and evenly over time.
The whole thing is sewn up in 100% cotton thread, which will wear down more quickly and authentically than synthetic-cored threads. This is by no means a fast process, but we like to compare denim with 100% cotton stitching to cars that need more regular oil changes.
