The Oakland location of Standard & Strange can be found at 5010 Telegraph Avenue, in the historic Temescal district. We are in one of the oldest commercial masonry buildings in Oakland known as the Cattaneo Block, built in 1871.
The original tenant was a restaurant and saloon known as the Brick House; and from 1947 until 2004, G & G Hardware occupied the space. After 2004, the space was subdivided with the acclaimed restaurant Pizzialo occupying the 5008 side of the building.
Our immediate neighborhood is worth taking an afternoon to explore. Directly behind us is Temescal Alley, our original home. A row of former municipal horse stables converted to small retail shops, you can find everything from an excellent plant and garden store to exceptional jewelry; along with great coffee and some ice cream to finish. The Alley is accessible via 49th street just off Telegraph.
We’re also near a number of restaurants to cater to just about every taste, along with two taprooms.
A short walk to our northeast takes you to Rockridge, another shopping district; and directly down Telegraph, there are a number of excellent shops and a wine bar on 40th.
If you have kids along, there is a fantastic playground a ten minute walk up Claremont Avenue.
Naturally, if there’s something in particular you’re looking for, our team is happy to chat about our neighborhood and get you pointed the right way.
